The transport needs of a solar plant

A solar-power project in the dry Atacama region of Chile required special transport services. Bolloré Logistics was mandated to handle approximately 30,000 t of equipment in 2021. The project involved a full year of delivering ten containers a day, Monday to Saturday, from the port of Angamos to the site in the northern Chilean city of Diego de Almagro, about 500 km away.

A road haulage partner from the Atacama region was contracted for part of the work. The main challenges were obtaining the required certification to enter the site, as well as managing the rotation of trucks to simultaneously coordinate loading and delivering operations.

The Diego de Almagro Sur solar power project is managed by Colbún, Chile’s largest power-generation company, which operates 25 power plants in Chile and Peru. The power plant is part of Colbún’s renewable energies investment scheme. Its installed capacity will come to 230 MW and its operation will prevent the emission of almost 325 million t of carbon a year. (sh)
