Tender for a first e-fuel deployment

The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (Zemba) will launch a new tender in January 2025 aimed at driving the first commercial deployment of e-fuels in maritime transport, starting in 2027.

By aggregating demand in 40 companies, Zemba intends to contract for 80 billion tonne nautical miles of e-fuel-powered shipping, potentially abating 470,000 t of greenhouse gas emissions. With this tender, it seeks bids from carriers offering e-fuels that achieve at least 90% emission reduction for primary propulsion.

The initiative builds on the alliance’s inaugural tender, which used low-emission biomethane and was awarded to Hapag-Lloyd, helping members meet collective emissions reduction targets.

The tender process, which is supported by industry partners like Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, will be accessible on Zemba’s new website, with a preparatory webinar scheduled for 21 November. (pb)
