Following the completion of the NRLA and the opening of the 4 m corridor, rail's share of freight transport through the Swiss Alps reached 74.9% in 2021, the highest level in 30 years. According to the Swiss federal office of transport, about 860,000 trucks crossed the Alps in 2021.
This is about 3,000 or 0.23% less than in 2020 and about 40% less than when the performance-based heavy vehicle charge was introduced in 2001. Nevertheless,
28.4 million t were transported by rail in 2021. Transportation increased by 17.3% on the Gotthard rail axis and by 7.2% on the Lötschberg-Simplon axis, despite ongoing construction work. (ben)
