Switzerland: one out of three HGVs defective

A total of 90,459 trucks, semitrailers, delivery vans and company cars were controlled in Switzerland in 2018. Around 20,000 of those vehicles were found to be defective and about 5,190 vehicles had to be taken off the road.

The most common faults were illegal dimensions and weight, technical defects and infringements of the working/rest time regulations. The inspections were carried out randomly.

Out of all the checked vehicles, 28,683, or just under 32%, were subjected to a thorough inspection at an HGV control centre, and 61,776 or 68% were tested on the road and in spot checks. Switzerland also carried out inspections in 2,020 companies. (ben)
