Strong start to 2022 – but clouds on the horizon

The container throughput index published by the RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose from 123.9 points (seasonally adjusted) to 125.3 points in November, according to the latest flash estimate.

The index for Chinese ports again showed a remarkable increase, surging from 130.3 to 134.9 points. The index for Europe’s North Range showed a moderate rise, from 112.1 (revised) to 113.9 points.

The RWI/ISL index for December 2021 will be published on 31 January 2022.

Torsten Schmidt, RWI’s head of economic research, pointed out that “container throughput has increased significantly since October last year. The rapid spread of the omicron variant of Covid-19 will certainly have an impact on container handling, however.” (sh)
