Spanish ports report mixed figures

Spain’s state ports moved 365.6 million t of merchandise between January and August this year, which represents a decrease of 4.1% compared to the same period in 2022 – but 1.5% more than in 2021. 2022 didn’t yet see a return to the levels of 2019 (381.5 million t from January to August).

119.1 million t of goods (–8,2%) were transported in containers. Solid bulk (62 million t) and conventional merchandise (56.9 million t) roughly maintained their figures from the previous year (+0.8% and +0.9% respectively). Liquid bulk volumes fell by 4.4% to 117.8 million t. Ro-ro traffic recorded 48.7 million t (+1.8%).

The eight months saw exports decrease by 5.9% to 57.7 million t, which was mainly caused by a 12.7% drop in general cargo exports (27.7 million t).

Imports totalled 130.2 million t (–4.8%). Liquid bulk imports (69.8 million t, –4.3%) and solid bulk (34.9 million t, –9.2%) decreased, whilst general cargo imports remained unchanged (25.5 million t).

These figures represent an overall decline of 5.1% in the sum of imports and exports (187.9 million t) vis-a-vis last year, with levels similar to those of 2021 (+0.2%). (cd)
