Solar energy to cool food

The Swiss online supermarket Coop.ch is purchasing 30 new vans from manufacturer Man.

The vehicles are equipped with solar panels for the electric cooling of the food, which is expected to save the company around 1,000 litres of diesel per year.

The 30 new Man TGE 3.140 4x2F SB vans are part of a fleet renewal programme that includes a total of around 250 vans with a gross weight of up to 3.5 t. The new vans with solar panels are equipped with a 140 hp (103 kW) four-cylinder 2-litre diesel engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The payload is around 900 kg, the permissible axle load is 1.8 t at the front and 2.1 t at the rear. The vans are in use for up to 15 hours a day and travel up to 100,000 km a year. (ben)
