Shifting steel transports to the railways in Switzerland

SBB Cargo now transports steel and metal in combined transport for Debrunner Acifer in Switzerland. Around 1,000 truck kilometres have been saved by the modal shift since November, according to a post on LinkedIn by the Swiss freight railway.

The steel and metal is transported overnight by rail in 48 new swap-bodies from a central warehouse in Birsfelden to transhipment stations in eastern and western Switzerland. There they’re transferred to ten new lorries for on-forwarding over the last mile.

Debrunner Acifer’s new collaborative effort with SBB Cargo represents another step towards sustainable logistics for the firm. For some time now it has already delivered 40,000 t of steel annually by rail. (ben)
