Severe downturn for cargo traffic in Hong Kong

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has announced the air traffic figures of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for September 2022. During the month, cargo and flight movements handled were 341,000 t and 11,665, respectively, representing decreases of 25.0% and 16.3% compared to the same month last year.

Cargo volume was affected by global economic uncertainties, on-going geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains. Exports and imports saw drops of 30% and 25%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2021.

Cargo traffic to and from key trading regions in North America and Europe registered the most significant decreases. In the first nine months of the year, cargo volumes were 12.9% down from the same period in 2021.

On a twelve-month rolling basis, HKIA handled 4.6 million t of cargo, 6.7% less than the amount recorded in the same period last year. (cj)
