Self-driving trucks in port area

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and Munich-based truck manufacturer Man have tested a truck prototype equipped with electric automation systems in regular logistics operations in the port area.

As part of a two-day practical trial, Spedition Weets brought 40 ft containers on behalf of VW from the Weets logistics centre in Soltau to Hambrug.

When the truck entered the Altenwerder terminal, the Weets driver moved to the passenger seat to make way for a trained Man safety driver. The prototype truck carefully accelerated, approached the storage block at 25 km/h and manoeuvred the container chassis backwards into the assigned lane.

After the container had been handled, the truck automatically returned to the check gate. The safety driver did not have to intervene at all. (ben)
