Saudis to open freight line later this month

A new rail route in Saudi Arabia is located 97 km inland from the Persian Gulf, outside the urban area of Al-Ahsa. Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has now executed the first test runs there. The line is scheduled to be officially launched on 28 January.

Once it is operational, the route will increase the flexibility of freight movement between King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and the Riyadh dry port (both Saudi Arabia). It will also provide road traffic with more space and improve traffic flows in the governorate.

The project is part of the kingdom’s national strategy, which aims to develop advanced and sustainable infrastructure and solidify Saudi Arabia’s position as a global logistics hub, according to Saudi Arabia’s state-owned media agency. (ben)
