RMI approves Anemoi rotor sails
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) maritime administrator has granted an approval in principle (AIP) to Anemoi Marine Technologies for their rotor sail systems, following a review of two configurations of this wind-propulsion technology.
Rotor sails, also known as Flettner rotors, are vertical cylinders that harness wind power to provide additional forward thrust, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
The AIP was issued after evaluating the installation of rotor sails on a 210,000 DWT Newcastlemax bulk carrier, resulting in an estimated improvement of up to 20% in the vessel's energy efficiency design index (EEDI).
Anemoi's rotor sails have been installed on several RMI-flagged vessels. More and more shipping companies are adopting this technology to meet international emission reduction targets. (pb)
