Rising demand for eco ships

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) has secured an additional order for four 7,900 teu eco-friendly container ships from a European client, valued at KRW 606.7 billion (USD 432 million), bringing its total to eight ships for this year, with a combined value of KRW 1.2 trillion (USD 854 million).

These vessels, measuring 272 m in length and capable of 22 knots, feature advanced eco-friendly designs, including LNG dual-fuel capability, scrubbers for sulphur oxide compliance, and methanol readiness for future carbon-neutral operations.

The company anticipates improved efficiency and profitability by consecutively building ships of the same design at its Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, with deliveries to begin in 2026. The orders reflect rising global demand for container ships driven by increased shipping rates and the need to replace aging fleets with sustainable vessels. (pb)
