Record year for port of Barcelona


Attaining new heights: The port of Barcelona was able to increase its container throughput by 15% in 2018. The port lifted a record 67.7 million t across all cargo sectors last year, a 10% increase year-on-year.

 

Container traffic last year was in excess of 3.4 million teu - after a surge of 32.5% in 2017, when Barcelona became the fastest-growing European port.

 

Transhipment containers were key, rising significantly by 35%. Foreign trade containerised cargo also performed well, with 753,000 export teu, up by 6.6% year on year. On the import side 580,892 teu was registerd, 3.5% more than in 2017.

 

Liquid bulk, with 15.2 million t (mainly hydrocarbons), was the third pillar of growth, rising year-on-year by 5.2%. In terms of volume, the most important product was natural gas (+3%), followed by gasoline (+12.6%). However, in the liquid bulk sector, biofuels noted the highest increase (+34.8%). (kd)
