Record turnover despite sharp drop in orders

The German railway industry association (Verband der Bahnindustrie in Deutschland, VDB) has concluded an ambivalent bottom line for the 2020 financial year. With sales of EUR 12.5 billion, the railway industry achieved a record figure last year, which increased by 7%. Domestic business rose by more than 5%, export sales grew by almost 10%.

There was a strong slump in incoming orders from abroad on the other hand, however, largely due to the pandemic, according to the VDB. The total order intake in 2020 was EUR 14 billion. While orders from the German market rose by 23.5%, they slumped massively by 37.5% to EUR 3.5 billion in exports. Orders from abroad in the vehicle sector even shrank by 42%. (ben)
