Record level of global container fleet capacity

The liner's appetite for new capacities seems to be insatiable. The business intelligence provider Alphaliner has presented current figures, showing that the global container fleet´s capacity has just passed the threshold of 23 million teu. The latest deliveries were the two ‘Pegasus’ class vessels to MSC. The two 23,000 teu vessels joined the carrier's fleet on the 2M’s Far East - Europe network.

The last milestone in terms of capacity had been recorded in July 2018 with the level of 22 million teu. In 2019, deliveries of new containerships amounted to 826,000 teu. In contrast, scrapping has remained low with only 165,000 teu so far this year.

Some of the demand increase recorded since June is related to vessel downtimes from scrubber installations, said Alphaliner. A total of 44 ships with an overall capacity of 465,000 teu are currently undergoing retrofit work at various shipyards. (fd)
