Record growth in air cargo demand – Iata

The newest data from the International Air Transport Association (Iata) shows that, compared to 2023, full-year demand in 2024 increased by 11.3%. With those numbers it exceeded record volumes from 2021, according to Iata. Full-year capacity also rose by around 7%, while full-year yields were slightly lower, by 1.6%.

Iata director general Willie Walsh was pleased with the increase, saying that “air cargo was the standout performer in 2024.” The growth was boosted by “strong e-commerce” as well as “various ocean shipping restrictions,” according to Walsh.

For 2025 the association estimates less rapid growth of 5.8%. “Economic fundamentals point to another good year for air cargo,” Walsh underlined. As reasons he cited the downward development of gas prices and continuing growth in trade. In the meantime, geopolitical shifts could pose a challenge to adapt to for global air cargo players.
