Railfreight slows down

Switzerland’s railfreight volumes are still not picking up. In Q3/2024, the sector recorded 2.74 billion net tonne kilometres (nkm), the second-lowest figure since the start of quarterly rail reporting.

Only during the covid pandemic in Q2/2020 were fewer goods transported by rail, at 2.6 billion nkm. Railfreight volumes dropped by -1.4% compared to Q2/2023.

According to Litra, a public transport information service, this downward trend is mainly due to the economic situation in Europe and the numerous construction sites on the north-south axis.

The quarterly report on the railfreight sector is based on data from BLS Cargo, DB Cargo, Rail Care, SBB Cargo, SBB Carto International, Sersa, TR, TX Logistik and WRS. (ben)
