Powered by electricity and chip fat

Making rail transport greener with hybrid locomotives: DB Cargo’s first dual-power locomotive of the new generation will be powered by electricity and diesel from chip fat and will initially operate in Saxony-Anhalt in Germany.

On electrified sections, Siemens’s Vectron Dual Mode Light will run purely electrically, switching to conventional traction on routes without overhead lines, as was announced during the presentation of the new traction unit model in Halle (Germany) last Friday.

With this locomotive, DB Cargo can offer an almost CO2-free supply chain from start to finish. The German railfreight operator has already ordered 150 of these units, with which it can save around 12 million litres of fuel and 25,000 t of CO2. (ben)
