Positive trends in container traffic
The port of Hamburg witnessed positive trends in Q1/2024, with container throughput increasing by 1.1% to 1.9 million teu despite challenging geopolitical and economic conditions.
Notably, trade with the USA set a new record, reaching 179,000 teu, a 17.7% rise, while overall seaborne cargo handled was 27.4 million t, a 3.3% drop due to a decline in bulk cargo. Hinterland transport by rail also saw a slight uptick in container volume, up 0.9% to 641,000 teu.
The number of ship calls, especially medium-capacity vessels, increased, reflecting a stabilising trade environment. Container traffic with Mexico and Morocco also showed significant growth, indicating a recovery and diversification in trade relations. (pb)
