Port of Dunkirk looks back on a successful 2019

The French port of Dunkirk has published its traffic figures for 2019. The port's annual traffic continued its progressive development with an overall throughput of 53 million t. This was an upswing of 3% compared to the year before (51.6 million t).

Over the past five years, traffic growth has reached 22% from the basis of 43.5 million t in 2013. The rise of the container sector was again above the regular growth proportion with 450,000 teu handled, an uptick of 7% compared to 2018 (54% in comparison to the year 2013), also due to expanding transhipment activities.

Cross-Channel traffic (15 million t) is in decline because of the markets’ preparations for Brexit: the number of trucks and trailers came down by 2% to 583,000 freight units. Altogether, general cargo remained on pre-year levels with 20.1 million t.

While solid bulk - with the exception of grains going up by 43% to 2 million t - witnessed a backdrop of 9% (23.5 million t) year-on-year, the liquid bulk took a great leap forward. The rapid expansion of the LNG segment brought the total quantity of liquids to 9.4 million t, a rise of 71%.

Dunkirk invested more than EUR 42 Million in infrastructure in 2019. In 2020, the port will deploy an investment programme of EUR 37.7 million. The year will be devoted to the completion and operation of major logistics and industrial platforms. (mw)
