Norway helps IMO achieve its goals

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the government of Norway are launching the “Green Voyage 2050” project to help the maritime transport sector meet the goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. These objectives, which were established at the meeting of MEPC 72 in April 2018, envisage a reduction of GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels.

Throughout 2019 the Norwegian government will contribute NOK 10 million for this project, and the contributions for 2020 and the following years are pending approval.

According to IMO, the objective of the Green Voyage 2050 programme is to strengthen the actions of governments and port authorities to achieve emission reductions through legal and policy reforms, national action plans, initiatives by private sector associations and new technology projects.

The participation of 50 countries around the world is expected, although it will start in the form of a pilot programme in eight countries, from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific. (kd)
