North America's first IWT certified airline

It is estimated that the global illegal wildlife trade is worth between USD 7 and USD 23 billion. Furthermore, "there's a connection between how wildlife is treated, how it can spread zoonotic disease, and how we've ended up with the potential for pandemics in the world," says Teresa Ehman, senior director of environmental affairs at Air Canada.

In 2018, Air Canada Cargo became the first airline to achieve the Iata CEIV Live Animals certification, meeting the highest standards in the transport of live animals. Now, as a regional first, Air Canada has attained the Iata Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) certification.

Introduced in 2019, this certification incorporates the 11 commitments of the United for Wildlife Buckingham Palace Declaration for airlines engaged in fighting the trade in illegal wildlife. (ah)
