No limits for prices for newbuilds

According to Clarksons’ statistics, prices in the shipbuilding sector continue to point upwards. From an absolute low in November 2020 price have now increased by around 25%. This is the highest price rise since 2005, the London-based company said.

For higher ship prices, one has to go back to the days before the financial crisis in 2009. Inflation in the commodities and energy sectors do not suggest a quick cooling of the market. Container ships are at the top of the price spiral. A 15,500 teu ship currently costs 50% more than at the beginning of 2021.

Popular LNG tankers are holding their own, with a price increase of about 18%, while prices for MR tankers are growing by 21%. Many yards are now booking yard capacity for 2025, with Clarkson estimating 2.9 years of yard utilisation, up from 2.4 years in November 2019. (sh)
