New generation rolls into Le Havre

The Port of Le Havre, a major French container port for international trade and part of the Haropa Ports association, has welcomed four new gantry cranes from China, among the largest in the world, at the France Terminal in Port 2000.

Operated by GMP - Port Synergy, Port 2000, on 420,000 sqm and 700 m of additional quay length, land preparation and work relating to the construction of the wharf for substations 11 and 12 have started. The new container terminal is expected to be operational in 2024.

The four gantry cranes ordered by GMP were transported by the "Zhen Hua 27", a vessel specialising in the transport of heavy loads. Each crane weighs 2,100 t, has a lifting capacity of 54 m under spreader, offers a reach of 26 container rows and can handle two FEU simultaneously.

In order to unload and position the cranes, provisional rails were laid out alongside the quayside and powerful winches were employed. The four cranes will start operations in October. (mw)
