Netherlands' first CO2 storage

Porthos, a joint venture involving EBN, Gasunie, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, has finally decided to provide the investment required to commence construction in Rotterdam on the first major CO2 transport and storage system in the Netherlands in 2024.

This Porthos system is expected to become operational in 2026 with a total investment of EUR 1.3 billion. It will transport CO2 from companies like Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil, and Shell to empty gas fields off the coast of Rotterdam, permanently storing 2.5 million t of CO2 annually for 15 years.

The project supports Dutch climate goals and significantly reduces emissions in the Rotterdam port. The European Union has also recognised Porthos as a vital initiative to achieve climate targets. (pb)
