MSC wears the crown

As expected, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) overtook Maersk as the largest ocean carrier by operated vessel capacity on a global scale at the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, the Danish shipping company always claimed to focus on its strategy of profitability rather than fleet size.

Alphaliner's fleet statistics show that MSC now deploys a fleet of 645 container ships with a total capacity of almost 4,285,000 teu, corresponding to a global market share of exactly 17%. It is remarkable that, while other carriers banked on mergers and acquisitions, MSC’s rise to the top was organic by newbuilds and the acquisition of second-hand vessels.

In Q1/2022, MSC is expected to close its first carrier acquisition and buy a 67% majority stake in the Brazilian regional and domestic shipping and logistics firm Log-In Logistica. With a confirmed vessel order book of almost 1 million teu, the Swiss shipping group is expected to further consolidate its position in the first half of 2022, when numerous large newbuild container ships are scheduled to be delivered to the carrier.
