More containers handled in Guadeloupe
The Grand Port Maritime de la Guadeloupe (GPMG) was not spared the effects of the global health crisis. Yet, although most indicators were down compared to 2019, container traffic recorded a growth of 6%.
Between September and December, the implementation of the Fortaleza Express service with an exclusive connection between Brazil and Guadeloupe, favoured container traffic. The overall balance sheet for 2020 shows only a slight decline in traffic over the year (-2.3%).
The recovery after the setback in March began in May and reached a peak in the last quarter. Bulk traffic, particularly hydrocarbons (-11.7%), were largely impacted. Bulk sugar traffic is down, but a larger share of sugar is now packaged and exported in containers.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the GPMG is keen to maintain part of the investments planned for 2020, to the tune of EUR 6.5 million.
The construction of the 20,000 sqm solid ground of the Jarry Terminal was notably finalised, as well as the installation of protection devices against the cyclonic winds at the Basse-Terre Maritime Station. (cd)
