Montevideo's green plans for Europe

The ports of Montevideo and Hamburg have been in close contact since 2005, when they signed the first memorandum of understanding (MoU), which was renewed in 2013. Then as now, the focus was on the international exchange of knowledge and experience.

The third MoU was signed during a recent trip of a Hamburg delegation to Uruguay by Axel Mattern, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing and Cap. Nav. (R) Daniel Loureiro, vice president of the National Port Authority of Uruguay.

The new agreement focuses on the port as an energy hub. Uruguay is banking on the export of green hydrogen and plans to invest around EUR 1.9 billion in the development of this eco-friendly fuel by 2040. Montevideo, with its location directly on the Atlantic, is a suitable location for exports to Europe. (sh)
