MOL: a sustainability study for ammonia carriers

MOL Coastal Shipping, a subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), will conduct a concept study for a large coastal ammonia carrier in collaboration with Asahi Tanker and Ikous. The project aims to develop a sustainable ship type that meets customer needs, addresses environmental issues, and tackles crew shortages.

The proposed vessel, with a capacity of 10,000 cbm, is expected to launch by 2028-2029 and will transport large quantities of ammonia, a potential decarbonised energy source.

The study will focus on sustainability, including labour-saving measures, safety improvements, and crew wellbeing, as well as ship type development, such as GHG reduction, versatility, and smooth cargo handling. According to MOL Coastal Shipping, the initiative is part of its efforts to contribute to the commercialisation of eco-friendly energy resources and the realisation of a carbon-neutral society. (pb)
