Mario Sommariva takes charge in east Liguria

The Italian ports of La Spezia and Carrara have a new captain at the helm. Mario Sommariva was recently installed as the new president of the Port Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea by Italian transport minister Paola De Micheli.

Sommariva succeeds Carla Roncallo, who has moved to the board of the Italian transport regulatory authority, after a four years’ mandate. General secretary Francesco Di Sarcina was her interim replacement.

Sommariva, who is from Genoa, served as the Trieste-based general secretary of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea from 2015 onwards. Before that he held the same position in Bari for eight years.

His 40 years of experience in the shipping, port authority and logistics sector promise to be a valuable asset during this Covid-19 downturn.

La Spezia is one of the most important Italian ports; under Sommariva’s aegis it may soon sport new rail links across the Alps. (amh)
