Major stake in Italian rail operator CFI acquired

F2i Sgr, an infrastructure fund manager, and Ania, Italy's National Association of Insurance Companies, have acquired an over 90% shareholding in Compagnia Ferroviaria Italiana (CFI), an independent railfreight transport operator in Italy. The company was established 2007 and, measured in turnover terms, grew to become the country's third largest railfreight operator after the national railway’s Mercitalia business and SNCF’s Captrain, according to F2i.

CFI operates over 100 trains per week and its fleet includes ten owned railway engines, seven chartered locomotives and 700 boxcars. The remaining 7.5% CFI shares will remain in the hands of Giacomo Di Patrizi, the company's founding shareholder. He will stay on as CFI's CEO. (ben)
