Maersk names methanol-powered boxship in Mumbai

A.P. Moller-Maersk has named its latest dual-fuel methanol containership, the ‘Albert Maersk,’ in Mumbai. It is the eleventh vessel in Maersk’s fleet capable of running on methanol, reinforcing the company’s commitment to decarbonisation.

CEO Vincent Clerc led the ceremony, attended by India’s minister of ports, shipping and waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, diplomats, industry leaders and Maersk employees. This marks the first vessel-naming ceremony by a foreign shipping line in India.

Maersk sees India as a key player in green fuel production, supporting the transition to low-emission shipping. With 18 dual-fuel methanol vessels set for delivery by 2025, Maersk continues its push for net-zero emissions by 2040. The company urges the IMO to implement strong regulations for climate-friendly fuels. (ah)
