Lower throughput in Rotterdam

Throughput in the Port of Rotterdam suffered in the first quarter of 2020, also due to the corona virus pandemic. Goods handling in the first quarter was at 112.4 million t (123.9 million t), 9.3% less than in the same period last year.

The number of containers also went down to 2.09 million teu, a drop of 5.5% (2019: 2.21 million), the number of teu shrank by 4.7% to 3,55 million teu (2018: 3.72 million teu). Container handling for LNG and biofuels was one of the few segments with volumes on the rise (2082 units from 1766 units in 2019).

Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port Authority of Rotterdam, said: "Due to the Corona crisis, a 10-20% annual drop in throughput volume appears very likely." (mw)
