London Gateway transitions to HVO

DP World UK has phased out fossil diesel at London Gateway, shifting to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) from January 2024. As part of the company’s sustainability efforts, this change is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 8,300 t CO2 this year, equating to the annual output of over 4,700 cars.

Following DP World Southampton’s earlier transition to HVO, which cut emissions by 90%, London Gateway’s move aligns with DP World’s net zero carbon goal by 2050. Ahsan Agha, VP of port operations, said that this was a key requirement to meet customer’s supply chain needs and their own sustainability commitment.

The GBP 350 million new fourth berth at London Gateway, opening in summer, will further this initiative, introducing eight state-of-the-art electric straddle carriers, a first for any port worldwide. (pb)
