Liège's inland port on the rise

Belgium’s Port of Liège handled 15 million t of goods on the waterway in 2021, an increase of 7% compared to the previous year. It also reported an 1% increase in overall traffic (water-rail-road) compared to 2020, amounting to 19.5 million t handled in all of the 33 port areas.

For the first time in ten years, container traffic recorded a very slight decline (-2%) with nearly 114,000 teu handled at the Port of Liège's three container terminals. Nevertheless, the Autonomous Port of Liège generated a turnover of almost EUR 5 million, a growth rate of 11%.

The Autonomous Port of Liège thus intends to meet the objectives of the regional policy statement of the Walloon government in terms of modal shift (i.e., the transfer of freight traffic from road to rail and/or river navigation). The port also played an important role in the evacuation, by river, of the waste generated by the floods of July 2021. (sh)
