Less railfreight, more truck journeys

19.6 million t of goods were transported through the Swiss Alps by road and rail in H1/2024, 360,000 t or 1.9% more than in H1/2023. The railways’ share was 72.3% and 0.5% lower than in H1/2023.

The Swiss federal office of transport (FOT) said that the slight decrease in railfreight volumes was due to construction sites on important access routes to the NRLA (new railway link through the Alps), repair works in the Gotthard tunnel after the derailment of a train in August 2023, and the difficult economic climate in Europe. 480,000 trucks crossed the Alps by road in H1/2024, 3.5% more than in the same period in 2023.
