KTZ to rejuvenate its loco fleet

Manufacturer Wabtec closed a USD 405 million agreement to supply Evolutions Series ES44ACi locomotives to Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ). The new units will upgrade KTZ’s aging fleet and support growing rail demand in the region, the operator said.

The locos will be built at Wabtec’s Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty plant in Astana, Kazakhstan and are designed to operate in the country’s demanding extreme weather conditions and mountainous terrain.

The ES44ACi can operate for longer periods between maintenance overhauls than the current locomotives in KTZ’s fleet. It has a 12-cylinder and a 4,500-horsepower Evolution Series engine. (ben) www.wabtec.com
