Kiwi Rail trials Stadler’s hi-tech DM
Manufacturer Stadler Rail has delivered the first two locomotives to Kiwi Rail’s Middleton rail depot in Christchurch, New Zealand. Earlier this year, the carrier placed an order for 66 of these DM class locomotives to replace its aging fleet. The high-tech DMs have the potential to further cut emissions up to 25% and will be able to pull larger trains, Kiwi Rail said.
Over the next six months, the two units will go through an extensive testing and commissioning programme before they enter service. The DMs, which are produced in Spain, will continue to arrive in batches until late 2026. From the ordered 66 DM locomotives, 47 will be used in the South Island and 19 in the North Island of New Zealand. (ben)
