Kenya combatting truck theft with RIFD
Since 2016, all new trucks (and passenger cars) in Kenya have been receiving an RFID (radio-frequency identification) sticker for the windscreen when they are registered.
The so-called IDeSTIX is produced by the German company Tönnjes. Now the Kenyan national transport & safety authority (NTSA) has ordered more such stickers.
The Tönnjes products are used for electronic vehicle identification. The RFID stickers are personalised when issued on site and provided with a QR code, which can be used to scan information such as licence plate number, car colour, make and model. When removed, the sticker self-destructs, so it cannot be easily removed to conceal theft. (ben)
