Japanese wind power union

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has formed a capital alliance with Hokutaku, Japan's largest wind turbine maintenance company. With this alliance, effective from 9 January 2024, MOL acquires a majority stake in Hokutaku. Independent of specific manufacturers, Hokutaku services around 80% of Japan's wind turbines.

The partnership aims to leverage Hokutaku's extensive maintenance experience and MOL's operational expertise in social infrastructure and ocean transport. The collaboration is part of MOL’s "Blue Action 2035" initiative, focusing on boosting the company’s non-shipping business, specifically in offshore wind power.

The alliance has already embarked on several projects, including investment in the offshore wind power business, the development of a specialised offshore wind turbine operation and a maintenance training facility, and onshore wind power projects in Shimane Prefecture. (pb)
