Japanese potential for port of Hamburg


When the free trade agreement between the European Union and Japan takes effect, economic experts expect to see foreign trade increase this year. Hamburg is one of Europe's leading ports for goods moving to/from Japan.

 

A total of 1.3 million t of goods were moved as seafreight between Japan and Hamburg in 2017. About 99% of the volume was shipped in containers. The number of boxes shipped between the two nations reached 131,000 teu in 2017.

 

Japan takes 18th place among Hamburg’s top trading partners in the maritime container handling sector. The most important goods that are sent as seafreight from Hamburg to Japan include paper and cardboard as well as metals and chemical products.

 

Imports from Japan are mainly vehicles, machinery, household appliances, metals and metal products, as well as chemical products. Container traffic between the port of Hamburg and Japan increased by 9% in H1/2018. (kd)
