Jade Weser port continues to grow

With a throughput of almost 656,000 teu, the Wilhelmshaven container terminal at the Jade Weser Port (Germany) reported a two-digit growth rate for the third year in succession in 2018 (up 18 % compared to 2017).

Companies continued to flock to the site. About 22 ha within the port’s cargo handling centre (GVZ) were rented out in 2018; Volkswagen leased premises for a logistics hub for packaging car parts for Audi, Volkswagen and Volkswagen utility vehicles. The logistics provider engaged by Volkswagen/Audi is setting up a subsidiary in the port.

The regional government of Lower Saxony will increase its grant for investments into the port infrastructure from the previously planned EUR 30 million to EUR 41 in 2019. Wilhelmshaven is also one of the sites under consideration for national funding for the creation of an LNG hub. The German government’s decision to this effect is expected shortly. (kd)
