Is the European Green Deal in danger?
Combined transport volumes could decline by 8% until 2030 if the new EU road haulage rules on projects in this sector are fully implemented. This negative outlook is the consequence of a near double cost increase for short-distance trucking, an essential component of intermodal transport chains, versus long-distance trucking, according to a new study supported by the UIRR.
Combined transport is expected to contribute to European decarbonisation by saving up to 40 million t of the transport sector’s CO2 emissions under the European Green Deal. If, on the other hand, the new EU road haulage rules are implemented without any countermeasures there is a risk that carbon emissions will increase by a further 12 million t of CO2 between 2020 and 2030, UIRR said.
