Is Indonesia up for a global player?

The new player's annual throughput is estimated at 16.7 million teu per year. In Indonesia, with so many islands, domestic shipping costs are comparably high. Now, the authorities have decided to merge the public port operators PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) I, II, III and IV into one company, effective 1 October 2021.

This involves many entities: From 1 October, the four Indonesian port operators will become the world's eighth largest container terminal operator, according to current figures.

Pelindo I operates 19 ports in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau and Riau Islands, while Pelindo II, also known as Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC), manages 12 ports in ten provinces, including the well-known Tanjung Priok, the major container hub for the capital Jakarta.

Pelindo III runs 43 ports in seven provinces, including the transhipment hubs Tanjung Perak in Surabaya and Semarang in central Java, which connects to China, South Korea and Singapore. Pelindo IV operates ports in eastern Indonesia. It is planned that IPC will acquire the operations and assets of Pelindo I, III and IV. (cd)
