Interesting laden import growth in Q2/2023

The Copenhagen-based maritime intelligence provider Sea-Intelligence reports that, at 2.7%, the annualised NAEC (North American East Coast) laden import growth regained momentum in Q2/2023 compared to pre-pandemic 2019 figures. To avoid pandemic-related distortions, annualised growth is used. The growth rate dropped from double digits in H1/2022 to 0.3% in March 2023, stabilising at 2.0%-3.1% since then.

Conversely, North America West Coast laden imports saw a consistent contraction since September 2022, stagnating at 0% growth in June 2023.

Interestingly, East Coast ports briefly surpassed West Coast volumes in late 2022 but returned to a 1.06 ratio favouring West Coast by June 2023, albeit below pre-pandemic levels. (pb)
