Innovative rail ferry for Lake Victoria
Students in the shipbuilding and marine technology master programme at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences have won the design competition of the worldwide ferry safety association (WFSA) with a prize money of USD 5,000.
With its innovative plan of a safe and cost-effective rail ferry for Lake Victoria in Africa, the team prevailed against international competitors. The assignment was to design a cargo and passenger ferry for sailings between Kisumu and Mbita Kenya with the option to call at ports in the neighbouring countries of Tanzania and Uganda.
The design submitted by the teams in the rankings will be presented at the ferry safety conference in New York (USA) in April 2020. (ben)
