Industry urges more action for modal shift
European railfreight associations, railfreight CEOs and the European Parliament’s transport and tourism committee have endorsed a joint declaration on the need to speed up the modal shift in freight transport. The document predates a 2020 joint declaration which identified the need to act to deliver the modal shift.
The railfreight industry is now calling for ambition from European policy makers over the coming months. Three years on from the original declaration, railfreight’s modal share has not increased. This lack of growth calls into question the feasibility of the EU’s modal shift objectives as set out in the European sustainable and smart mobility strategy, the European Rail Freight Association (Erfa) said.
