Indian-made locos to be exported to Africa

For the first time, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec will manufacture locomotives for export to a global customer. The Marhowra plant will supply Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives, which feature a 4,500 HP Evolution Series engine. The plant will begin exporting these units in 2025.

To date, the site has built around 650 locomotives to be added to Indian Railways’ fleet. The Marhowra plant in the state Bihar was established in 2018 to indigenously manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives for the railway company. Since then, it has delivered 100 locomotives to Indian Railways per year. (ben)
