India's far-reaching freight corridors
India has completed all of its eastern dedicated freight corridor and more than 80% of its western counterpart. The country’s ministry of railways has planned and implemented the two freight corridors in an attempt to reduce logistics costs with higher axle load trains and double stack container trains and enhance connectivity within India.
In the east, the corridor links Ludhiana in the northeast with Sonnagar, Bihar. In the west, it runs from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal near Mumbai northeastwards towards Dadri. Once completed, the western corridor will measure 1,506 km.
The ministry aims to encourage the development of new industrial hubs along both routes and to improve connections between the northern hinterland and western ports. (mk)
